The effects of severe storms pose a significant threat to this region. To address the impact from climate change, Commission staff assists communities in the preparation of multi-hazard mitigation plans and emergency preparedness strategies for residents and visitors to our region.
Massachusetts MVP Program
In 2018, the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness grant program began providing support for Massachusetts communities to plan for climate change resiliency and implementing priority projects. The Cape Cod Commission is a certified MVP provider, and has worked with five towns in Barnstable County: Barnstable, Bourne, Eastham, Truro and Wellfleet.
Multi-Hazard Mitigation Planning
The Cape Cod Commission drafted the Barnstable County Multi-Hazard Mitigation (MHM) Plan in 2010, identifying hazards that are common to the communities of Barnstable County and specific locations where the region is vulnerable to these hazards. The plan also assess the past mitigation strategies chosen to reduce the risks associated with these hazards and recommends new strategies where necessary.
Commission staff also provided technical assistance to eight Cape Cod communities in developing local multi-hazard mitigation plans: Bourne, Harwich, Mashpee, Provincetown, Sandwich, Truro, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth.
