Overview
The Barnstable County Economic Development Council (BCEDC), an advisory board to the Barnstable County Commissioners, was established to guide economic development policy in a manner that will improve the quality of life for all, foster a healthy economy offering a range of employment opportunities at livable wages for year-round residents, and protect the region's natural and built assets today and in the future.
The BCEDC functions include:
- advise on the development of the economic development goals for Barnstable County,
- acts as the Cape Cod Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Strategy Committee and Economic Development District (EDD) governing board,
- advises on the planning, content and implementation of the CEDS,
- approves the 5-year CEDS document, and
- advises the Barnstable County Commissioners, upon allocation of funds to award economic development grants/contracts, on the merits of proposals (including the License Plate Grant program).
For a full list of the BCEDC functions, please see the ordinance.
There are 11 voting members representing the main economic interests of the region and working towards long-term economic sustainability. There are 3 additional ex-officio members representing the County Commissioners, Assembly of Delegates, and Cape Cod Commission. The Cape Cod Commission staff provides technical expertise and administrative support to the BCEDC, attending all BCEDC meetings and reporting to the committee on activities related to CEDS development and implementation, as well as providing guidance to the Council in the execution of its duties.
