Hyannis Project stakeholder meetings Feb. 6 and Feb. 15

Hyannis residents will have two opportunities at upcoming public meetings to hear details Cape Cod Commission’s Hyannis Project. Both meetings will be held at the Barnstable Senior Center, one from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 6, the second on Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Working with the Town of Barnstable Growth Management Department, the Commission is looking at Downtown Hyannis, the Route 132 retail plazas and the neighborhoods that surround and connect these important economic centers.

Along with an overview of the project goals, there will be discussions touching on housing, economic sustainability, land use and community design.

Hyannis residents, as well as those with an interest in Hyannis, are encouraged to attend and become stakeholders to follow and participate in this planning process.

The tentative meeting program includes the following:

Follow the Food -What supermarkets tell us: The Commission will take a unique look at the development of Hyannis and the Town of Barnstable through competitive location and relocation of chain grocery stores from 1915 to the present.

Live Polling: Interactive session.

Survey Results: A synopsis of the recently-completed Hyannis survey will be presented. Close to 1,200 people took the Commission’s Hyannis survey, offering a broad look at the perceptions of Hyannis from its residents, visitors, shoppers and workers.

Growth Incentive Zone Reauthorization: An overview of the process and goals for reauthorization of the Downtown Hyannis Growth Incentive Zone, or GIZ. It is set to expire this fall. A Growth Incentive Zone is a planning tool available in the Regional Policy Plan that allows communities to exempt an area from Commission review if certain standards are met.
