Centerville-Hyannis Corridor Study Plan
The Cape Cod Commission will conduct a transportation planning study for a segment of Route 28 in Barnstable, from Old Stage Road to Bearses Way.
This road is one of three major regional east-west transportation corridors on Cape Cod, as well as a commercial destination for tourists and residents alike, with numerous attractions, businesses, hotels, and restaurants. The study area is often congested, particularly during the summer months, which is a barrier to reliable and convenient access to important economic and transportation centers in Hyannis.
Particular concerns have been raised recently over the four-lane, undivided section of Route 28 just east of Old Stage Road, and the intersection of Route 28 and Bearses way. Plans for reconstruction of this intersection are currently underway as part of an approximately $4 million Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) project with construction to begin in 2015.
The Commission will undertake this study in order to develop alternatives that will provide safe and convenient access within the study area for all users of the roadway system including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
On Monday, March 17, 2014, there will be a public kickoff meeting from 6PM – 8PM in the Hearing Room in Barnstable Town Hall. The goal of the meeting is to listen to feedback from the community on the transportation-related opportunity and issues along the corridor. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up to be a part of more focused planning meetings for smaller segments of the study corridor planned in April.
