Cape Cod Commission partners with towns to host virtual workshops on low-lying roads

Attendees will identify vulnerable roadways and help craft climate-resilient solutions

A series of virtual workshops for citizens interested in identifying roadways vulnerable to storm surge and sea level rise will take place over the next few weeks.

Cape Cod Commission staff are working with the Towns of Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Dennis, Eastham, Orleans, Sandwich, Wellfleet, Truro, and Yarmouth to examine vulnerabilities in the roadway network and identify solutions.

With funding support from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program, the Cape Cod Commission has contracted with the Woods Hole Group (WHG) to conduct a vulnerability assessment of roadway segments, bridges, and culverts due to flooding from the combined effects of sea level rise and storm surge.

This project will develop a prioritization framework to help identify the most critical road segments in each community. Potential adaptation solutions will be developed for two road segments in each of the ten participating towns. WHG will prepare three potential solutions, ranging from more traditional engineering solutions to green, nature-based approaches, for each of the prioritized road segments.

Virtual workshop attendees will learn about the goals and objectives of the low-lying roads project and the hazards associated with coastal flooding, evaluate low lying roads most vulnerable to coastal flooding and discuss which roads are most critically at risk, and identify priority road segments that should be considered for adaptation solutions.

The schedule for upcoming workshops is as follows:

  • Yarmouth:  November 29, 2021 6:00 PM
  • Eastham:  November 30, 2021 2:00 PM
  • Dennis:  December 7, 2021 10:00 AM
  • Sandwich:  December 7, 2021 4:00 PM
  • Wellfleet:  December 8, 2021 4:00 PM
