Cape Cod Celebrates Bay State Bike Month

Annual celebration of cycling moves from May to September

For Immediate Release (September 16, 2020) BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA -- The Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority will join regional and state-wide efforts to celebrate bicycling as an alternative to driving motor vehicles during Bay State Bike Month in September.

Typically held in May, this year’s Bike Week was postponed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New this year, the week has been expanded to a full month to raise awareness about bicycling for transportation, fitness, and fun. Key events are being held the week of September 21st-27th and will abide by social distancing requirements.

The highlight of Bay State Bike Month on Cape Cod encourages participation in a Cape Cod Bike Month Bingo challenge. Check off bingo squares by riding on different bike trails within the region, replacing a car trip to your favorite coffee shop or ice cream shop with a bicycle trip, and getting a bike tune-up at a local bike shop. Download the bingo card and share your rides on social media using the hashtag #BikeWeekBingo to be entered into a prize raffle.

In addition, the Cape Cod Commission will be highlighting bicycle projects and initiatives with a special newsletter released during the month.

Bike Month activities also include giveaways on select Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority bus routes during the week of September 21-25 for transit riders who mount their bikes on the buses.

A table will be set up at the Hyannis Regional Transportation Center with free bike gear giveaways including bike lights and bells to keep residents safe while bicycling Cape Cod roadways.

Additional Bike Month events being held throughout the Commonwealth are posted on the Bay State Bike Month online calendar (https://www.baystatebikemonth.org/), including MassCommute’s Bicycle Challenge. Bay State Bike Month is supported in part by the Federal Highway Administration, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and MassBike.
