Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund Awards $53.1 Million for Regional Wastewater Projects
The Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund continues to support critical clean water infrastructure across the region. On April 29, 2026, the Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund Management Board voted to award $53,107,500 in subsidies to support ten wastewater projects in five Cape Cod towns.
“This latest round of funding reflects the region’s strong commitment to addressing longstanding water quality challenges with meaningful solutions,” said Kristy Senatori, Cape Cod Commission Executive Director. “By supporting these projects, the Fund is helping Cape Cod communities accelerate critical wastewater infrastructure improvements that will protect our environment and our economy for generations to come.”
Contingent commitments for 25% subsidies were awarded to projects listed on the 2026 Clean Water State Revolving Fund (SRF) Intended Use Plan (IUP). Funded projects advance wastewater infrastructure targeted at improving water quality in Barnstable, Dennis, Eastham, Mashpee, and Yarmouth.
“The progress reflected in this round of funding speaks to the dedication of everyone involved in advancing these projects,” said Kevin Galligan, Chair of the Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund Management Board. “These investments are a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction.”
With this latest round of awards, the Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund has committed more than $360 million in subsidies since its inception in 2018.
The Management Board also took steps to accommodate potential new member communities from Dukes and Nantucket Counties by amending the Fund’s regulations to clarify when new members become eligible for subsidies.
The Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund provides financial support for wastewater infrastructure and water quality remediation projects. Its subsidies have been a primary driver of long-overdue progress on critical local initiatives. Funding is sourced through a 2.75% excise tax on traditional lodging and short-term rentals.
The Fund provides a 25% subsidy to eligible projects listed on the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (MassDEP) Clean Water SRF IUP.
