Overview

Route 6A (Old King's Highway) is a regional corridor of historical significance that is majorly owned and maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Town-owned sections of Route 6A exist in Barnstable Village and in Provincetown.

A nationally designated scenic byway, Route 6A serves as a vital corridor where people live, work, and travel. However, the roadway currently lacks safe and accessible options for walking, biking, and other forms of transportation. In cooperation with the adjacent towns and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Commission is conducting a two-year study to explore ways to improve safety along the corridor while protecting its unique character.

In the first year, the study will focus on reviewing and collecting existing data such as traffic counts, vehicle speeds, crash records, roadway plans, and previous studies, and conducting public outreach. In the second year, the study will identify opportunities and constraints related to future roadway and multimodal improvements that both enhance safety and maintain Route 6A’s scenic and historic qualities.

Public Outreach

Public participation will be a key component for this regional transportation study. We want to hear about the varying needs from all users of the roadway and obtain feedback on potential improvement ideas. The public outreach will consist of in-person or hybrid meetings, as well as pop-up tables at community events.

Organizations, committees, and groups interested in inviting Commission staff to present on this project or hold a pop-up table may reach out via email: transportation@capecodcommission.org

Help spread the word - the Outreach Kit includes downloadable graphics and text to use on your website, in your newsletters and emails, and on social media channels. View the Route 6A Transportation Visioning Study Outreach Kit

The first series of public meetings are scheduled for June 2025 along with pop-up outreach tables for Summer 2025. The public meetings will provide an overview of existing data (crash history, traffic volumes, speeds, etc.), an overview of existing roadway accommodations (right-of-way, sidewalks, shoulders, etc.) Public feedback is desired to understand concerns and opportunities to improve this regional corridor. A list of the meetings held to date are as follows:

June 2025 Listening Sessions

Three public listening sessions took place in June 2025, a hybrid meeting at the Cape Cod Commission office on June 11, and in-person meetings at Provincetown Town Hall on June 16 and Brewster Town Hall on June 17 (click to watch)
