Traffic Advisories
Subsurface Investigations, Soil Testing and Vegetation Management Work for Cape Cod Bridges Program
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that contractors are conducting subsurface investigations and related vegetation management operations alongside state highways and on US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) property in areas north and south of the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne this spring as part of the Cape Cod Bridges Program.
This vegetation management, which may include shrub and brush removal, and selected branch removal, is necessary to allow crews to conduct borings. These borings involve drilling into the ground to extract soil samples. MassDOT will analyze the samples to learn about subsurface conditions such as soil strength and composition. This information is critical to designing safe and durable bridge components and related infrastructure nearby.
Additional borings are being conducted in areas north and south of the Sagamore Bridge which do not require vegetation management work. These borings will be taken within the state highway layout and on USACE property on numerous roadways including Route 3/Route 6, Route 6/Scenic Highway, Meeting House Lane, Sandwich Road, Cranberry Highway, State Road, MidCape Connector, and the Canal Service Road.
This work will enable future construction operations and is an example of MassDOT's commitment to advancing the Program efficiently and effectively.
MassDOT recognizes the importance of preserving Cape Cod's natural resources during this phase, and will only remove branches and vegetation when necessary to allow for access by drill rigs, equipment, and crews. This work will take place during daytime and evening hours.
These critical activities represent some of the first early action items for the Cape Cod Bridges Program. MassDOT will continue to provide public updates as the borings work resumes in the fall.
Additional Traffic Information: Many of the proposed borings and associated vegetation management activities will require temporary daytime and evening lane/shoulder closures on the following roadways:
- North of the Sagamore Bridge
- Route 3/Route 6
- Route 6/Scenic Highway
- Meeting House Lane
- South of Sagamore Bridge
- Route 3/Route 6
- Sandwich Road
- Cranberry Highway
- MidCape Connector
